When visiting Koh Chang in November 2019 we decided to stay in the Bang Bao Bay area which is the less touristy part of Koh Chang. It’s also ideal for a trip to the abandoned cruise liner as you can simply walk there (20 – 30 minutes on foot).

You might be surprised to know that the largest scrap yard for ships in the world located in Alang, India recycles around 50 percent of decommissioned cruise ships. Cruise ships either use their own power to go or they’re towed, which is a bit more difficult. People lined the streets all along the way to watch and cheer for their friends and favorite vehicles. Hundreds of machines on wheels ranging from off road trucks to motorcycles attended the event. Despite threats of all day rains preceded by flooding the night before the turnout was still large, and a good time was had by all. An official event for most of its history, each event held since 2017 has been unofficial as a result of increasing expenses incurred and lack of profits by each of the communities along the cruise route. The 2017 and 2018 events had another factor, in the form of increased traffic along Fort Street due to a prolonged partial closure of Interstate 75, which parallels Fort Street in the Downriver area, during those two years. Although I-75 had since fully reopened by the time of the 2019 edition, the event remains unofficial, and this status has allowed the 2020 edition to continue to move forward in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Children 12 years and under will be admitted free with a ticketed adult. Thousands of participants flocked down the road in classic cars of all types (and lots of new hot rods too). AmericaJR’s Gloria and Jerome Rzucidlo were LIVE at the 2022 Fort Street Cruise.

It was a nice way to spend the evening on a hot day. The tour group had been very organized and the drinks were great. Customer service took care of me just fine, captain was cool, first mate was chill, they let us have our fun on the boat and have a great time.
